unravel

The earliest song from Unravel, ‘State of Grace’, was composed in 1987 when I was just seventeen and probably only the third song I’d ever written up until that point that I’d liked and therefore kept. The other one was Shine it On, which also eventually made it onto the record and the third was a Vangelis style synth orchestration that was extremely kitsch, even back then. Thus armed with two songs I thought were not kitsch, I set myself the goal of making an album and becoming a ‘real recording artist’. I was seventeen. read more...

threshold

I’m not sure what exactly I was expecting when I got the demo tracks from Amarevois’ second album project Threshold, but if I thought I was in for a relaxing, spiritual ride, I was very, very wrong! Much darker and moodier than it’s predecessor Threshold marries cinematic, operatic and prog-rock funk textures with (as Sean Hegarty was quoted as saying) “a menacing, compelling depth.” In this second interview, I asked about this darkness. read more...

burning the temples

After writing the kinds of soft, fluffy tracks that featured on Unravel, I started to move into darker compositional territory. I had recently begun writing my space opera Neolithica, which had a decidedly dark and ominous score and a grittier production style. These tracks make up the bulk of the second album project Threshold, and include several tracks originally written for the opera, including Older than Stars, Land of Mu and the title track itself. read more...

residual effect

Residual Effect is an album project that was devised as a way of collating the various electronic pieces that I’ve done over the past ten years. It was only after I had been composing for many years that I finally incorporated a computer into the studio set-up and began working with sequencers. The album features remixes of Rising and Now or Never, which both appear on the Unravel project, as well as pieces written for my film project Neolithica. read more...

even as we speak

Even as we speak is an album project that serves as a forum for my contemporary orchestral works. Many of the pieces were originally conceived as parts of film scores and some were tone poem ideas that grew into extended compositions. There is a definite centring on the piano, where once again my CP70 electric grand piano lends its decidedly ‘other worldly’ voice to what is otherwise a natural orchestral landscape. I tried several times to read more...

neolithica

The Neolithica album project is a collection of extracts from my original score for the film of the same name, the screenplay for which I began in 1997. It was originally created for the stage in a more traditional operatic production format, but as the material developed, it became increasingly evident that to portray the essential elements of the story convincingly, it could only be done through the medium of film. read more...

scrambler

Free was the debut single from Melbourne producer Colin Snape a.k.a Scrambler, with lyrics and vocals by Amarevois. First released by EQ records in 2002 on the 2 CD set Balance 004 – by Phil K. Due to popular demand, it was released the following year as a single in its own right on vinyl, with remixes, to critical acclaim in electronic music circles. This is an excerpt from the Residual Effect interview in which Amarevois explains how this record came about. read more...

labium ensemble

Labium Ensemble is the ensemble that I formed in 2001, which was originally born in order to enable me to explore my love of this early music. This coincided with me having decided to learn the viola, and not long after we formed, I purchased one and set about unlocking it’s mysteries. The two other original members were mother and daughter team Chris Tammer read more...
