Even as we speak is an album project that serves as a forum for my contemporary orchestral works. Many of the pieces were originally conceived as parts of film scores and some were tone poem ideas that grew into extended compositions.
There is a definite centring on the piano, where once again my CP70 electric grand piano lends its decidedly ‘other worldly’ voice to what is otherwise a natural orchestral landscape. I tried several times to record the pieces with a conventional piano, but was somewhat disappointed in the results, due in part to the timbre differences between the CP70 and the conventional grand piano.
About half of the orchestral instruments are programmed via sample libraries, with the odd actual instrumental performance blended in. It is definitely the most intense programming I have ever attempted, or am likely to attempt again. Next time, I want some baton snapping and some mad and overly enthusiastic waving of the arms at a real live simultaneous orchestra!
Apparently, orchestral people don’t believe in singles.
