Residual Effect is an album project that was devised as a way of collating the various electronic pieces that I’ve done over the past ten years. It was only after I had been composing for many years that I finally incorporated a computer into the studio set-up and began working with sequencers. The album features remixes of Rising and Now or Never, which both appear on the Unravel project, as well as pieces written for my film project Neolithica (such as Trophies and Land of Mu) and visits a variety of electronic ‘sub-genres’, including house, techno, drum ‘n bass, glitch and trance. One of my first tastes of the electronic music industry was when I collaborated with Scrambler on the breakbeat track Free, which was originally released on the Grey/EQ label on Balance 004 by Phil K in 2001 and later released on vinyl with remixes by Lo Step and Luke Chable. Scrambler wrote the music and I contributed the lyric and vocal lines. The track was well received and I’ve adapted it to fit into the live band set as a jazz rock extravaganza. Many strange and wonderful pieces of gear were lent to me by equally strange and wonderful people throughout the production of this album. I really enjoyed having an opportunity to tinker with synths and redefine my ideas about performance and composition. The computer is now indispensable as a studio tool, but more so as a recording device these days, and ever less as a sequencer. There are no proposed single releases for this project.
